It is possible to find some cool relief; it just takes a little creativity. One trick I know of is put a block of ice in a pan, set up a fan in back of the pan and you have makeshift AC. The other is put your bedsheets in the freezer for five to 10 minutes before going to sleep.
I found a few links with great tips on beating the heat:

When I was growing up, my mom refused to get central air or even a window unit – she didn’t even have fans. No joke. Her solution to stay cool? She’d tell us to go to the basement if you want to cool off. Okay, yes it was cooler, but the basement was effin’ scary. I mean it could’ve been used in slasher flick. I think just one of the bulbs worked at any given time, and it was creepy, dank, damp and moldy. I stayed upstairs in the sauna/upper level of the house.
If you’re lucky enough to have a finished, non-scary basement, spend some quality time down there. The heat won’t last forever; in fact, the temperatures will be only in the low 80s by this weekend.
And for the love of Pete, please don’t wish it was winter, because that shit’ll be here before you know it and when it’s 5,000 below outside, you’ll be wishing for days like this.
