It LOVES heat and humidity. I leave it on the balcony during the summer and it grows like a weed. It can also handle some degree of neglect. I’ve forgotten to water it for a few weeks at a time and it still keeps growing.
I’d gotten this plant in the summer of 2006 from a co-worker; a cutting with just one leaf. I put the little cutting in the west window – and it grew, and grew and kept growing. Today, that same little cutting is in a 14 inch pot and it needs an upgrade to a 16 pot, which it’ll have just as soon as I find a suitable, and easily movable, pot.
But I’m gushing about my plant for a different reason. At various times throughout the year, there’ll be flowersprays blooming at the bottom of the plant (there are pictures below). There’s no specific time of the year it blooms, it just does and when it does, there’s never more than two or three sprays at a time.
Last week we had some blast-furnace level heat. I stepped outside to make sure the plant had enough water and I saw two new flowersprays. When I looked closer, there was more than two – there were 16 new flowersprays! My plant has never had that many at one time, it’s nothing short of extraordinary.
A conventional 10th anniversary gift is diamond jewelry, but I’m loving the unconventional, and very beautiful, gift of pink waxy flowersprays.
